Semiconductors: The Industry that Changed the World, to be presented March 27 by Dr. Thomas Caulfield of GLOBALFOUNDRIES


The Saratoga County Prosperity Partnership is pleased to announce that the 33rd annual F. William Harder Lecture in Business Administration at Skidmore College will be presented by Dr. Thomas Caulfield, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Fab 8, GLOBALFOUNDRIES. The Saratoga County Prosperity Partnership invites the business community to join them at this event and learn more about the future of this industry in our community.

The lecture, titled “Semiconductors: The Industry that Changed the World,” will be held on Monday, March 27 (2017) at 5 pm in Gannett Auditorium, Palamountain Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.  A reception will follow.

Caulfield follows in the footsteps of esteemed local business leaders to present the Harder Lecture, including Joel Quadracci, chairman, president, and CEO of Quad/Graphics; Dennis D. Dammerman, vice chairman of the board and exec. officer GE Capital Services; and William P. Dake, president, Stewart’s Ice Cream Co. Inc.

Skidmore’s annual F. William Harder Lecture in Business Administration was inaugurated in 1985 through the generosity of F. William Harder, a Skidmore parent who served as trustee from 1968 to 1980. The lecture brings together students and faculty with industry leaders to explore the current business environment and upcoming challenges in the rapidly changing business world.

During the presentation, Dr. Caulfield will discuss the importance of collaboration in the context of the semiconductor industry, and he will share wisdom acquired throughout his 30-year career leading and managing global technology companies. Caulfield will provide insight into the rapidly changing semiconductor sector and where he sees the industry’s future growth.

GLOBALFOUNDRIES’ latest leading-edge semiconductor wafer manufacturing facility, Fab 
8, is located in Saratoga County. Caulfield joined the company in 2014, and leads the operations, expansion, and ramp-up of semiconductor manufacturing production at Fab 8, where GLOBALFOUNDRIES supports customers on the world’s most advanced semiconductor manufacturing technology platforms.

Caulfield’s career has spanned engineering, management, and global operational leadership with leading technology companies including Soraa, Ausra, Novellus Systems, Inc. and IBM.

Dr. Thomas Caulfield is senior vice president and general manager of the company’s latest leading-edge 300mm semiconductor wafer manufacturing facility (Fab 8), located in Saratoga County, NY.  Caulfield, who joined the company in May 2014, leads the operations, expansion and ramp of semiconductor manufacturing production at Fab 8, where GLOBALFOUNDRIES supports customers on the world’s most advanced semiconductor manufacturing technology platforms.

Dr. Caulfield brings a track record of results through an extensive career spanning engineering, management and global operational leadership with leading technology companies. Most recently, he served as president and chief operations officer (COO) at Soraa, the world’s leading developer of GaN on GaNTM (gallium nitride on gallium nitride) solid-state lighting technology. Prior to Soraa, Caulfield served as president and COO of Ausra, a leading provider of large-scale concentrated solar power solutions for electricity generation and industrial steam production. Before that, Caulfield served as executive vice president of sales, marketing and customer service at Novellus Systems, Inc.

Prior to that, Caulfield spent 17 years at IBM in a variety of senior leadership roles, ultimately serving as vice president of 300mm semiconductor operations for IBM’s Microelectronics Division, leading its state-of-the-art wafer fabrication operations in East Fishkill, NY.
