Decisions/Actions to be Taken

Setting the Stage · Last month, the work groups discussed possible environmental strategies the Partnership can spearhead so that we can continue our efforts to send community-wide prevention messages.

· While delivered in more focused settings, Media Literacy fits this model because kids’ behavior and attitudes are shaped not only by their peers, but also by the world around them – including TV. Media Literacy helps them deconstruct the information being presented to them and decipher what exactly advertisers are selling.

Presentation:

Media Literacy

Nicole Karas gave an interactive presentation with video clips about kid-oriented advertising on TV. She discussed the various other messages advertisers are selling besides just their products – i.e., gender roles, what’s considered cool, risk-taking behavior, etc. N/a

Nicole asked for feedback about her presentation, how to describe it so kids will want to attend, and other venues where the presentation could be shown. Suggestions included:
  • Rather than High School students, bring show to younger kids who might be more indignant about being targeted. Suggestions included:
  • 7th grade health classes
  • DARE class time
  • Saturday night program at the YMCA
  • More challenging course title: "You’re a Sucker: Find Out Why"
  • Gear the show so it’s instructive for parents, too:
    • 15-minute preview at Parent Open  House nights at school
    • At Strengthening Families
    • Parent programs at area nursery schools
    • Child development classes at BOCES
    • Parenting classes in Ballston Spa
Nicole will review suggestions and explore other avenues.

Work Groups Ran out of time for this section Will do work groups at the April mtg.
Miscellaneous Items ·     The Adirondack Tobacco Free Network has current results of their tobacco survey, which could be paired with information about what Reality Check has been up to lately. Is the group interested in having this information presented at a Partnership meeting?

· Meeting time: is more time needed for monthly Partnership meetings? Should we adhere more closely to schedule, meet outside of monthly meetings, etc.

· Group decided to invite ATFN near the anniversary of the Clean Indoor Air Act in July 2004.

· We don’t always need more time. When we do, Partnership staff should send an e-mail asking group if they’d rather do 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Next Meeting The next Partnership meeting will take place on Thursday, April 8th at the new district administration offices, 3 Blue Streak Blvd, 2nd fl.(old Junior High wing of the High School on Circular Street). N/a
