The Parent University Summit
was successful, with an amazing pancake breakfast showdown thanks to Mike
Piccirillo and Rich De Martino. Thanks also to Brenda Quinn and Four Winds
for providing Panera Bread bagels, danishes, coffee, and juices.
The keynote speaker, Jay Rifenbary, was well received, along with leaders
for several other workshops, including Dr. DeMartino's workshop, Dr. Jeff
Daly's workshop, and Dr. Joyce Peabody's workshop, and sessions on Early
Childhood Development, Financial Literacy, Smartboards, and Career Planning.
There were 78 attendees, including 15 walk-ins.
Many new ideas were developed for possible up-and-coming Parent University
seminars. Check the school
district website for updated information on Parent University
programming.
Parenting Wisely
Information:
The
Parenting Wisely pilot program was successful, with 8-10 families
attending and all giving positive feedback. There have been other ideas
mentioned on how to draw families that could really benefit from a parenting
class. One idea was to work with courts to mandate parenting classes.
Another was to make classes more accessible to families via internet and
radio, piggy- backing on current events held at schools in order to save
parents' time, and uploading parenting sessions to the internet through
web-based classrooms like Empire State, and using blogs and chat rooms
to direct parents to podcasts and other resources.

Committee
Updates
|
Community Awareness:
This committee is working on many
projects, including getting public service announcements regarding underage
drinking into movie theaters; working with drug companies, pharmacies and
local law enforcement to provide prescription and drug drop-off locations;
and working with the athletic department on their code of conduct.
Youth Committee:
The Youth Committee is working on
recruitment for a Sticker Shock Campaign. They are also hoping to get
involved with other projects such as After Prom, promoting a fun and safe
alternative to after prom drinking parties.
Transition Committee:
No update available.
Parent Resource Committee:
This committee is working on sustaining Parent University programming and
putting together new workshops.
