The keynote speaker is adolescent brain development expert Mike Nerney.

Partnership
Updates

The United Way has given the Prevention Council and the Partnership permission to apply for a technologies grant that will allow them to explore media-based outlets for parenting programs, such as podcasts, radio broadcasts, online videos, etc.  This will give busy parents the opportunity to gain access to parenting seminars on various topics like bullying or college prep while going about their daily lives. The grant is due February 10.

Any suggestions for reaching parent audiences with alternative methods are appreciated.

Committee
Updates

   Transition Committee
This committee plans to expand the August high school welcome for 8th to 9th graders to include a social component. Recognizing that students need to visit with friends after the summer, the committee is hoping to add a school fair , including tables for school clubs and other information, as well as carnival-type food. A second component will include a presentation to parents and kids on the top 5 things parents and students need to know about high school. The last component will offer tours of the building with student hall guides.

Community Awareness Committee:
This meeting was rescheduled for the 21st of January to coincide with Judy Ekman’s training. They are also still working on a drug drop within the community and hoping to implement a public awareness campaign with doctors' and dentists' offices. A Parents Who Host media campaign is also planned for spring.

Youth Committee:
This group will meet at the end of January.  Becky Black met with the Saratoga High School SADD Club and plans to join forces with them on a Sticker Shock Campaign in the springtime. Sticker Shock is a campaign where students place stickers on large packages of alcohol (with the permission of local store owners) in order to remind adults that buying for minors is illegal and that adults can be held responsible. The statement on the sticker will be a “Parents Who Host Lose the Most” message.

Parent Resource Committee a

The next Parent University offering listed on the district website will be held on January 28th. The topic is “My Child Has Been Tested: Help Me Understand what the Results Mean.”

Next year the committee will try to establish a monthly schedule of programming. This will be set prior to the school year.

Parent University would also like to begin a neighborhood series of programs in an effort to reach a broader parent base.  For those parents who may not be able to attend school-based programs for any number of reasons, this program will bring much-needed parenting programs close to home. The first one is scheduled for March 24th at Jefferson Terrace from 5:30-7:30 with a mediated topic on bullying.
