News and Announcements

A big thanks to John Kelly for his donation of the 42-inch flat screen TV in the Prevention Council conference room. This TV will replace a tiny one that's used for the various trainings, including TIPS and Learning Thursdays.

The United Way grant for $17,000 has been submitted. This grant would be shared between the Shenendehowa Community Coalition and the Partnership for the development of alternative parenting resources. These resources would be made available to the community in ways that recognize busy parent schedules and incorporate electronic and other communication means, such as the Internet, podcasts, radio transmissions, etc.

As part of Parent University, the school district’s tech department is interested in working with the Partnership to produce programs and videotape speakers.

February is Domestic Rape and Violence Month.

Dave Johnson from Cinemedia gave a presentation on using local movie theater screens to promote underage drinking ads and no-use prescription drug messages. These ads would air during every movie, every day in both Clifton Park and Wilton. Plasma screen TV’s in the lobby would also air the same messages for more viewing possibilities. The ads run $60 per screen for 30 seconds, and $30 per screen for a 15 second ad.

It is possible to have them create a spot or to create one ourselves, however there is a production cost of $525 - $775 depending on length of the spot. It would be $1000 to purchase the copyrights for the spot. Changing text within the spot is free. If we decide to buy ad space, additional space is available at a reduced cost in the mall as well. More information is available at www.ncm.com.

Committee
Updates

   Transition Committee
The High School Transition Committee’s meeting was canceled and will be rescheduled.

Community Awareness Committee:
This group is looking to host a prescription drug drop on May 1 of this year. It would be anonymous, but they are hoping to have law enforcement involved along with local pharmacies.

On March 18, Mike Nerney and Paul Arciero will present a 2-hour program to high school athletes on
the effects of alcohol on the brain and the effect of nutrition on athletic performance.

Youth Committee:
The Youth Committee has joined forces with SADD. The group organized a successful Super Bowl survey which was given to all PE and Health classes. The kids were asked to document the most memorable ads The results are:

#1 for MS & HS: Doritos: Hands Off

#2 for MS & HS: Doritos: Shock Collar

#3 for MS & HS:  Doritos: Stole Tim’s Doritos

#4 @ MS: Bud Light: Stranded
#4 @ HS:  Budweiser: Human Bridge

#5 @ MS:  Bud Light: Human Bridge
#5 @ HS:  Bud Light:  Light House

This survey was done to gauge the effect of the alcohol industry’s advertising on youth.

We will soon begin planning the “Sticker Shock Campaign,” which will be promoting the “Parents Who Host Lose the Most” message.

Parent Resource Committee
Parent University will host a bullying program at Jefferson Terrace as a part of their efforts to reach parents within the community and make access to these programs easier. This program will be held on March 24 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Head Start classroom at the Terrace. Childcare and a spaghetti dinner will be provided. The program will be advertised in the Terrace newsletter and with the help of local churches.
